While waiting for the USS John F. Kennedy to depart South Boston for the last time from Castle Island, heavy smoke was visible in the South Dorchester part of the city. At approx 1043 Hrs Boston Fire began to receive calls reporting a fire on Woodworth Street. Box 3255 was struck for Walnut & Woodworth Streets. Arriving companies found heavy smoke and fire showing from a large 3 story wood frame. Severe cold and strong winds hampered firefighters and photographers alike. After taking the job in, it was decided that the Kennedy would stay in Boston one more night.
